Non-OL Use of WCLN Resources
What is a WCLN Download Tech?
For general information about accounts on WCLN.ca, see:
WCLN.ca > About WCLN > WCLN.ca Accounts
Each district/program will have one (or sometimes two) Download Techs. These folks are typically the technical leads within their program and will install courses for teachers. As such, Download Techs have access to course downloads (found at the bottom of the Discussion Forums).
The Download Techs are assigned by the OL Program admin.
Course Downloads
Those designated as "Download Tech's" can find the course downloads in the Discussion Forum (scroll to the bottom) and restore them locally for their district's DL and/or BL teachers.
All courses in the download area are free to WCLN members except for the material labelled as StudyForge. An additional license is required to use these resources. To access this additional license, find the corresponding vendor under the Partners area and contact them.
LTI Set-up
If your program's site (D2L or Moodle) is new to WCLN courses, then you'll need to configure some LTI settings PRIOR to restoring the courses.
If you've already set-up the Spero LTI on your site for other reasons, you don't need to do it again.
Otherwise, you NEED to set-up your site for this system PRIOR to importing new courses.
Course Loading - D2L
Within D2L, you'll make course shells per your local org layout, then load them with WCLN content.
This can be done manually or by using Bulk Tools. For details, chat with your D2L support person.
Course Loading - Moodle
Within Moodle, you'll restore course backups from WCLN content.
Building the course shells and loading the content is done as a combination in Moodle.
Non-OL Use of WCLN Resources
WCLN member districts are welcome to use WCLN content both within their OL Programs AND within their local classroom, helping to support classroom teachers.
-
-
- Successful incorporation of WCLN resources in districts includes:
- Alternative education programs can be supported with WCLN resources.
- Support teachers in school can use WCLN resources to adapt for students with health challenges.
- Progressive classroom teachers can be more flexible (personalizing the learning) within their classrooms.
-
Incorporating the resource beyond your OL program is welcome, as long as the OL admin team takes responsiblity for:
-
-
- Halting inappropriate use of the resources (uses where it would impact other teachers in the province and/or degrading the reputation of the WCLN consortium).
- Use of the resources in an insecure situation.
- Including the student count in your yearly membership.
